Proskovia is a textile artist whose work is a reinvigorated exploration of the purity of fabric and how naturally it can become a part of our daily rhythm. She works only with hand sewing and through this process imbues each layer of clothing with experience and presence. The palpable serenity of a clothing item made with such patience and care is not only visible in its beauty but also in its personalization. Her clothing reads like a tale pouring forth from the wise old lips of an ancient story teller. Each stitch holds a word and the intricately embroidered surface, the face of a friend. Rather than confine herself to techniques of the past and recreate the style of her ancestors, Proskovia looks to embody the humble ritualistic mentality of the old way through presence and an inspired way of life. In this her traditional way of creating clothing is alive and sensitive. This residency is a way for her to share that slow approach to creation and the joys offered in the time it takes for each hem to come together.
Each day will begin with a lecture and discussion portion, following this the lesson and work period will begin. Residents will complete a simple project each morning. Simple projects include a needle holder, a bag, a hat or a necklace piece. The next work block will be looking towards completing a slightly more complex piece, a blouse, skirt, or pants. Which item they choose to create is up to the resident. Multiple items, time willing, are more than welcome to be made. The final block of each day will be spent plucking away at the largest piece to be created in this workshop, a coat. Pace and complexity of the project is completely up to the resident, support and one on one attention will be available no matter skill level.
This residency is open to any skill level, you needn't have stitched a single stitch.
